I’ve been a freelance writer and photographer for more than two decades. I did have one ‘real’ job for three years when I worked as the senior editor of a magazine called Outdoor Canada, but the office life was not for me.

After that, I went on to write weekly, full-page features for Canada’s National Post newspaper. Travelling around the country and finding stories about interesting people and places was a lot of work, and also a lot of fun.

I left the National Post to work as the editor-at-large (means you mostly get to write about whatever you want) for Explore magazine, which at the time was widely considered the best place to publish creative nonfiction in Canada. I wrote longform features that somehow managed to win eight Canadian National Magazine Awards as well as fourteen honourable mentions. I also wrote a monthly column for Explore, called “At Large”, which is why I chose the name of this website. It sounds like a cross between a roving reporter and an outlaw on the run, so that seems about right.

I now live in Madrid, Spain, where I’ve been since 2007. My main focus is writing about luxury travel as well as outdoor adventure. My articles and images have appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide. I also recently published a large-scale photo book on Spain and I’m currently podcasting on Spanish food, as well as whatever else interests me about Spain. It’s the ‘at-large’ thing again.

Thanks for stopping by. If you like my work, please drop me a line and say hello. (Sorry my email address is not clickable, it’s to prevent spam.)
